Chamberlain flew to meet Hitler in Germany to say that England would intervene if Hitler and the Nazis invaded Poland. Chamberlain had allowed Germany to invade Austria and the Sudetenland as Hitler claimed they used to be German territories and he was just taking them back. Hitler could not believe his luck as Britain and France seemed to allow him to take whatever he wanted. Chamberlain flew back to England with a signed agreement by Hitler that Germany would not invade Poland. He stupidly believed Hitler was a man of honour that could be trusted although Winston Churchill voiced his belief that Hitler would not honour the agreement.
Chamberlain had believed his bit of paper signed by Hitler would keep Poland safe but in September 1939 The German army invaded. Chamberlain demanded Hitler withdraw his troops or Britain would declare war so whether Hitler believed the British would do nothing or believed that the German military was so strong Britain was no threat. Hitler started WW2 and it was the attack on Poland that actually started the war that was to become WW2.

Your premise is incorrect. Chamberlain was known as the Great Appeaser, and the evil whiny little ***** he was appeasing was adolf hitler. chamberlain thought that he could get an armistice with Germany which would allow the ruling class of England to continue to enjoy privilege and the workingclass be damned to slave labor levees.

One opinion about Chamberlain is that he saw the war as more or less inevitable and that he signed the Munich agreement with Hitler to buy time. The UK was not ready for war at the time.

The British empire lost over a million men fighting in the first world war - Chamberlain's reluctance to rush headlong into another war was understandable.

No, I do not think anyone at the time seriously believed that Poland could fend of a German attack for more than a very short period of time Germany was a far superior military power. . Also, the UK and France were never prepared to "attack Germany in force", their military plans were defensive and based on Maginot line and Belgian fortifications. Accusing Chamberlain of starting WW2 is a very strange theory here. There are many reasons given for World War II but this certainly is not one of them.

Hitler proclaimed that the Sudetenland was his last territorial demand. He proceeded to prove himself a liar by then invading the rest of the Czech Republic. Britain and France learned that Hitler would continue his aggression and that they could face him either with or without Poland (for what the latter was worth). Sometimes "peace" is just another word for "surrender".
